4. TRADE UNION INFLUENCE ON HRM: EXPERIENCE FROM INDIAN BANKING INDUSTRY

ABSTRACT:

Looking back one can trace the efforts of unions in exerting influences on firm policies and procedures relating to people management. The trade union movement in India, like in many other countries, has also been instrumental in bringing about changes in the way organisations manage their human resource.

In the past trade unions used their traditional mass power to bring about changes in the system. In addition, they had also resorted to wielding powers through the political system in enabling legislations to establish different dimensions of people managment.

This paper examines trade unios in India banking industry as a case and traces their influence on HR management in banks. Before we look at this aspect, abrief review of the banking industry is taken as the context.
